why would the rules be any different for an attic fan than for any other fixed in place appliance?

they do have to have some kind of thermal cutout so in case of a fire they shut off, but an attic fan would have that as part of the fan.

Yes the question is,are there any specific NEC requirements covering attic exhaust fans?

Well ....

They should be installed in attics. :D

Code wise nothing particular to attic fans but it will require a disconnecting means at the fan and you should follow the instructions for the fan to comply with 110.3(B).

Customer might want a breaker or switch at an easy to get to location so they can be turned off when not wanted.
Personnaly i am not sure they do any good in saving money by burning electric. Anyone have any fact info on them ?

I have had a small fan in my attic vent for years. It has a thermostat that turns on the fan when temperature exceeds 100F (adjustable). It definitely keeps the attic several degrees cooler in the summer, as well as the upstairs of our two story house. We have a about 18 inches of cellulose insulation above the second story ceiling. Even though our northern Ohio summer temperatures max out at 95F, and that only rarely, the fan turns on just after dawn on a warm sunny day - our dark shingle roof is a very effective solar energy collector. I am convinced that the fan energy costs far less than the cost of additional air conditioning.

fire hazard

fire hazard

I have known of several instance where these have caught on fire. In one case Lighting may have been the instigator, jdging from the flame/smoke damage. In another case a power surge , his house was at the end of the line when a large company had a unfortunate immediate shut-down. In my opinion I think they work as well as stated but would not place one on my roof.. I would put a 20in gable mounted fan.
