I'm taking a practice exam, to prepare for my next exam, and I came across a question that I don't understand the answer too. Which of the following is NOT a wiring methode for service entrance conductos 600 volts or less? The answer is Schedule 40 rigid nonmetallic conduit, but 230.43 (11) says Rigid nonmetallic conduit is a wiring methode for service conductors. Is it because it's schedule 40 and not schedule 80? I would appreciate any help.

Hello Ice,

230.50.

Thanks chris. I also found 230.49 which takes you to 300.5. 300.5 (4) calls for schedule 80 rigid nonmetallic conduit. I don't understand why 230.43 (11) just doesn't say schedule 80 rigid nonmetallic conduit. I guess it is what it is. Thanks again for the help.

I forgot in Florida your test is based on the 05. FWIW 230.49 is gone from the 08 and now 230.50 reads like this:

230.50 Protection Against Physical Damage.

(A) Underground Service-Entrance Conductors. Underground service-entrance conductors shall be protected against physical damage in accordance with 300.5.

(B) All Other Service-Entrance Conductors. All other service-entrance conductors, other than underground service entrance conductors, shall be protected against physical damage as specified in 230.50(B)(1) or (B)(2).
(1) Service Cables. Service cables, where subject to physical damage, shall be protected by any of the following:

(1) Rigid metal conduit
(2) Intermediate metal conduit
(3) Schedule 80 PVC conduit
(4) Electrical metallic tubing
(5) Other approved means

(2) Other Than Service Cable. Individual open conductors and cables, other than service cables, shall not be installed within 3.0 m (10 ft) of grade level or where exposed to physical damage.
Exception: Type MI and Type MC cable shall be permitted within 3.0 m (10 ft) of grade level where not exposed to physical damage or where protected in accordance with 300.5(D).
