Looking for guidance of what NEC code could be applied, or followed in doing electrical inside a pre-engineered metal structure, please advise. Basically adding electrical (lights, receptaclonto a metal relocatable building. can be permanent building, but mostly temporary.

Much depends on how the structure will be used. Is it intended to be a temporary dwelling, a medical clinic, a retail store, a restaurant, or something else? Also, what will determine how long it will be in place (i.e., is this a "temporary" situation that could end up remaining in place for years)? And finally, how will this thing get power (i.e., separate utility supply, sub-fed from another building, on its own generator, or something else)?

Thanks for response

Mr. Beck,

the structure can remain in place for years. currently the function would be for truck wash bay area. it will be powered separately from a transformer provided by client.

Are you saying that a truck will drive into this structure and will be washed inside the structure? That would make the entire interior a wet location, and anything electrical (lights, receptacles, wash pump motors, etc.) would have to be listed for that environment. Reference 110.11.

In terms of power to the building, you are in 225 (outside feeders) and not 230 (services).

Since this is not a dwelling unit, there are no specific requirements for installing receptacles. Also, Table 220.12 doesn't list your type of structure, so you are on your own for including sufficient capacity for lighting loads.

Charlie, thank you for the response. In terms of wet location, yes, I understand that the electrical equipment inside shall be wet location rated, including lights and GFI receptacles. In relation to light switch, is there any specific code requirement of having light switch in door entry way, or is it exempt in this situation? any thoughts and opinions are definitely welcomed.
