Preparing for Virginia Journeyman's Exam

Hello! New poster. Been lurking around for about a year.

Getting set to take the journeyman's exam.

I'm in VA using the 2005 NEC.

I guess I should be directing my question to Mr LarryFine, who seems to be the Virginia expert on this board. ;)

The exam has two portions. "Statutory & Reg" (10 items) and "Electrician Portion" (80 items)

Question: What would the "Statutory and Regulations" portion cover?

I'm looking at the pdf of the regulations and statutes booklet from the "VA Board of Contractors" site. Are there certain sections I should be concerned with more than others, or would I be responsible for knowing the entire thing.

Some of this looks like straight forward definitions, but some (much) of it reads like lawyer pornography to me. :-?

In order to get a contractors license in VA, they make you take the 8 hour business course. When you take this course, they'll give you all the necassary material to pass the regulatory exam.

I am studying for the same. DPOR accept your app? Where are you at?

He would not need the course for a JW. But the course would give him all the material needed to pass the regulatory part of the exam.

I'ts been a long time since I took my Journeyman exam, but I believe it's all still open-book. I only remember having the current NEC with me, norhaving regulatory questions on that one.

I suggest calling the DPOR at 804-367-8511 (or 367-8500) and asking your questions, or checking out more of the site at http://www.dpor.virginia.gov/ .

Again, check with the DPOR and ask about testing qualification requirements, permitted materials, and practice tests, which are great for preparing, by the way.

My Master's and Contractor's tests were more recen and were open-book. I don't remember what, if any book I had for the Contractor's. I did score 90's on all three. :cool:

The DPOR doesn't administer the testing. That's subbed out to PSI (was Experion when I tested), and they can be reached at 800-733-9267 or http://www.psiexams.com/ .

It's Experior, and that's who I tested with for my journeymans. On paper. No calc allowed. And had to turn in your scratch sheet also. The Masters on computer with PSI was so much better. Great advise on calling DPOR, they'll send you everything you need to pass the regulatory exam, which is only ten questions.

Good luck with the exam. I strongly suggest taking Mikes practice exam. I did before i took my DPOR exam and it showed me three things:

A.) How well I knew the code and where to find the code
B.) What I needed to work on.
C.) How long it took to take the exam.

I also purchased Mikes contractor DVD set. Well worth the money spent. I now watch them to refresh my memory!

Well, I went in and took the test today, and passed both portions. I used all the time in the technical portion because I like to be thorough. There were a few questions that I went back to answer that I couldn't find. The answers were probably staring right at me word for word but I couldn't see it. :roll:

I'm kind of bummed that they don't let you know your score, only that you "passed". I was told they only show what questions you missed if you fail.

Now I just have to wait for them to mail my licence. (I think. My original application said that PSI would notify the board and they would send it to me. However the exam proctor said I was supposed to download another form from DOPR and send it in.)

Anyway, Thanks for the tips!

That's interesting. When I tested, I received all three scores (Journeyman, Master, contractor's), but wasn't told which questions I missed.

I would recommend Mike Holts Exam Prep Book ( not because I am in it...lol ) but because it is a great publication. Their are not enough issues probably on the exam that bridge 2005 and 2008 NEC so either the 2005 or 2008 version of the prep book should work fine for you.

If you don't want to purchase this book.....many other educators publish some great books also or you could just sit down and learn how to use the NEC, learn how to use the index and as you get better at understanding the articles and specific sections use the contents portion. The calculations on the journeymans exam are very easy and simple one structure type of questions.
