Hi Guys,

We are working in a 5 story apartment building on the first floor of which is going to be a new pizza restaurant.

Question: We have to power up the make up air & intake on roof for ansul hood system. The only way to roof is though an exsting 2 " emt conduit already installed in concrete. I know code says you are allowed to run type MC cable (10_3) (2) through conduct used as a sleeve, however since there is no way to support mc (5 floors) because its inside conduit will inspectors allow this? And does conduit sleeve have to be grounded? My feeling on this is I should be able to fish MC down conduit sleeve from roof with supports or grounding conduit since mc is its own entity???

I am not sure that the NEC addresses this. I would check with the authority having jurisdiction. IMO if there is no violation per NEC then it should be allowed.

Your "raceway" is not a raceway if it is not complete from enclosure to enclosure therefore it is just a sleeve or chase and not an NEC raceway. You can fish any otherwise allowed wiring method through that chase or sleeve.

Long vertical runs could mean additional support that are not usually needed on shorter runs just to support the weight but I don't think you have that much length that this is going to be too much of a problem. Though I don't know that NEC specifically addresses this kind of support for other then conductors in a "raceway" either, but still may be worth consideration.

blackbear,

Welcome to The Mike Holt Electrical Forum !

Does the existing 2" emt conduit penetrate fire rated
assemblies in your 5 story bldg. ? [ i.e. - there are
other bldg. components & systems at play in your
application, besides your electrical questions ].

I guess it doesn't hurt to further clarify what he has, I took what was said to mean this raceway is encased in concrete and if so then it probably isn't considered to be penetrating any fire ratings.

Thank you for your input !.......It was \ is my intent to get **blackbear**
to think outside the "proverbial electrical box" with his application.

Nothing wrong with that either, maybe I am assuming too much and he doesn't have what I think he has.
