I don't have a copy of the NEC on hand, and am in desperate need of some details indicating ground cover requirements and depth requirements for primary service installations, encased, covered in concrete or not covered at all. Can anyone direct me to an online source that would provide me with the appropriate NEC requirements for such circumstances? Thanks.

Re: primary service installations

You will not find a copy of the NEC online unless you join the NFPA.

I assume that by primary service, you are talking about the NESC requirements for a service lateral from an electric utility in the 5 kV or 15 kV class.

If this is the case, the required cover is 30 inches and lesser depths may be used where supplemental protection is provided which should be sufficient to protect the cable from damage by expected usage.

Thanks, Charlie - you are correct - it is the service from the pole to the transformer that I am referring to, however, it's the actual requirements (depth and physical construction) of that "supplemental coverage" that I am trying to find out more about. Thanks very much for the definitive answer about the NEC availability online.

Re: primary service installations

The call is by the serving electric utility. The statement I made is paraphrased from the NESC and is the responsibility of the user to determine what depth is necessary to adequately protect the cable.

If this installation is for the utility equipment
you will not find it in the NEC. It is found in the NESC as Charlie said. You need to contact the utility to get their specs. My utility requires 48" which exceeds the NESC.. If it is not for the utiltiy the requirements are in table 300.50.
