When installing a roof top exhaust fan in a print shop/paint shop, does this fan need to be explosion proof if in a commercial building

It depends on the location and the concentrations of any flammable vapors in the atmosphere being exhausted.
General ventilation for the entire structure vs. independent exhaust for the paint booth, for example. Someone will have to do air sampling to make a determination.

I have done work in automotive body shops. I could never understand why it was OK to arc weld in them, but against the rules to smoke....
(Actually, I do know why that rule exists, I just though it was a bit odd at first)

I worked 16 years in a printing plant.
It is going to be based on if they are flammable products or not.
Also look at where you are installing the fan. Will the exhuast reenter another air intake.
If you are indoubt talk with the AHJ - Fire Cheif
