What is the differences between a motor starter and a contactor? Is it just the overload protection offered by the heaters or am I missing something? Which would be most suitable for using in a start stop station for a small 7hp well pump?

I would go with the starter, I wouldnt want to burn up a 7 hp motor trying to save a buck

A contactor is but one component in a motor starter. It cannot be a motor starter all by itself, because some other item has to turn it on an off, and because something must provide it power.
