Why did the "In Trade Since" get removed? This was informative and helpful in our responses at times.

Of course maybe that was just me. ;)

Re: Profiles

It sure separated the old dudes from the beginners :D

Maybe age discrimination was involved ;)

Re: Profiles

I will admit that on a few occasions I have looked at a persons profile to determine how to answer a question and determine how in depth I need to make them. However, I wouldn't want someone basing my abilities and knowledge from my listing on time in the trade. I would rather have my posts and comments make that determination. I personaly have had three occasions when someone has made a personal message to me and used my time in the trade to argue their opinion. Some people can accomplish in a year what may take others several. I won't miss the detail too much! :p

Bryan: I agree time does not prove anything by itself.
I know a cook who has been at it for 40 years. He still puts out lousy food. :D

Am I the only one that finds this post to be arrogant?

We are in the presence of a prodigy.

Re: Profiles

Don't take it to hard Bryan, I remember earlier in my life when I would get irritated at being carded when I bought a beer. (I mean I even had a moustache and realy thought I was "somebody" hmmm )

Now I would tip the store clerk or bar tender if they asked for an ID.

Re: Profiles

No Roger, my point is that I made a generalized statement about the fact the people learn and develop at different rates, and Bob felt it necessary to make a personal comment about me based on my experience and time in the trade. If I was 40 years old and 25 years in the trade, would Bob make that statement? My point was that I have had 3 private messages that personal attact me, and not my post comments. "Calling yourself an instructor isn't fooling anyone considering you are probably an apprentice that is copying notes from your first year apprenticeship text books. Come back when you have had a real career and have a thought of your own." Heres another, " I see you have only been in the trade since 1995. Greenhorns like yourself how no place responding to a problem that you could not even begin to have the experience or knowledge to understand. Stay on the porch with the pups!" Now my question is if any of you that have had more significant time in the trade have received these type of personal comments about yourself. These people don't know anything about me or anything I have accomplished in my short and limited career. Based completely on my listed time in the trade, they felt it necessary to make such remarks. I come to this forum to learn and to help others that are also tryng to learn. I treat everyone with equal respect regardless if it is their first post or an amazing 500 like Bennie! I sometimes have an oppossing view that I feel should be left up to the readers to make an informed decision on without basing the decsion on age, time, or what remarks someone else says about someone.

Re: Profiles

Why do you think people respond to you in this manner, are they all wrong?

I have never gotten any PMs like that, and I certainly put up a lot of posts.

You are right, for some people it comes easy, others have to try and some never get it.

But no matter where you fit in here, IMO there is no substitute for experience in the field.

Re: Profiles

My time in the trade would be misleading since I don't have a lot of formal electrical training.I read the posts here and know in my heart that I'll never be as sharp as most here, but I've discovered that that you're never too old to learn code and theory. I've learned volumes in the last few months here and at other electrical forums. Thanks to everyone who shares their knowledge here. Russell

Re: Profiles

Roger

The reason is:

To have a reference to time you must use a calendar.

Since the calendar we use today is based on the birth of Christ, it is politically incorrect to talk about religion therefore there is no way to reference time-in-grade.

Now since there is no reference to use for anything (electrical for an example) nothing applies.

If your were to use zero as the reference for ground, you would offend all the "zeros" doing electrical work. This would be in violation of the ADD act (the Americans with Disabilities Act (for those of you have it)).

I hope I have not offended those of you who do not have a dictionary or a " Funk and Wagnall".

Mike P.

BTW the “P” stands for perfect.

PSS to the WEBMASTER. Can we hve a seperate topic for those that want to insult each other?

You are right Mike and I have edited my post.

I agree with russellroberts there is always more to learn, and I thank those here that I have learned from.

Re: Profiles

Some people confuse arrogance with confidence and determination. Some people hide envy with insult.
I know the comments that some have made to me have nothing to do with me, so I put little value in them. I guess it is wrong to have an oppossing view on this forum and the only people that are allowed to be right are the ones with what they consider experience. I again argue that some people will experience more in a few years that others take a career to acheive. I don't understand Bob, you invite me to other forums and then suddenly you take everything I say as if it I am personly talking to you. Did I do something to offend you? Please tell me. I did not know anything I have every said as being persona in any way. This is really silly and a waste of forum time. There is no personality in my posts. There is no attitude in my posts. I am simply giving my view and my interpretation of the code intent. I am not arguing because I think I am smarter than than you. I do not ask questions to see if you are smart enough to answer them. I am tryting to tap into this wonderful knowledge and experience that most of you have to assist in my knowledge and abilities. So, can we please leave the conversation on the topics and not the persons? Can we stop with assumptions of someones mood and tone in a post? Thank you

Bryan P Holland (P is for prodigy) :D

Re: Profiles

I think we can all get along if you do as I do (since I know everything and am never wrong). :) I try to answer everything with conciseness and, most of the time, tongue in cheek. When found to be wrong, jumping to conclusions, reading something into a statement that wasn't there, or just plane misreading a statement or question, I will normally respond with an admission of guilt.

My personal belief is that this forum is the best one around and I enjoy picking on everyone (of course that gives you the right to pick back). I sincerely hope to offend no one and to add to everyone's understanding of the Code, especially the NESC and utility issues. With all my "superior" knowledge, I didn't think I would learn too much from this forum . . . boy was I wrong! For the most part, you guys have a wealth of knowledge and are not afraid to share it with the rest of us, thank you. I am humbled by the knowledge that most of you have and am learning a lot, please, keep up the good work and please continue to forgive me when I screw up. Thanks again, Charlie :D

I totally agree with you Charlie, I've gain more respect of you. Before, I didn't like you so much because you came off a little aroggant, but now all that water under that dam, and it was misunderstanding.

I think you're the best!! :)
