Customer who fills propane tanks in a room stores cylinders out on a loading dock, it has a roof but no walls(actually one wall thats from the area where they fill the tanks). My question involves the area where the tanks are stored. Is the loading dock area C1D1. no filling goes on there. The tanks are stored there. if that area is C1D1 how high up does it go? In other words can other wiring methods be used besides rigid on that wall?

Thanks
jon

i'd call it class I div. 2.

flammable gases are stored there, but not likely to be
a hazard under normal conditions.

the extent of the classified area would be the same
as a gas dispensing area, if i had to guess....

Thanks for the replies, The room where they fill the tanks has a door that opens up on the dock. I assumed that rooms wall is where the C1D1 area ends but wasn't 100% sure. Everything in the building is done in rigid which I would probably continue but wasn't sure about sealing fittings. Also the power for the building and the propane pump is located in a subpanel that is mounted on the wall of dock, that seems wrong to me but.....

I agree it is not a division I location, but don't think that it is all that clear whether it is a division II or non classified area.

May want to see what fire marshal or even an insurance company wants to call it.

How much propane or how many containers need to be handled to differentiate non classified and class II? Many non classified areas have a container or two present. The exchange programs where you bring in your empty and purchase a filled tank - are those classified areas where they store these? Most I see are at a store front and may have non classified wiring methods in their vicinity.
