So why is it we have to protect our wires which are already in one or two thick layers of plastic, inside another piece of plastic or steel, yet the propane company gets by with thin bare copper tubing for an explosive gas?

I believe in most of the country, bare copper gas is not really allowed any more, but I don't necessarily think it is wrong.

I am guessing that it is because if you hit it with a shovel, gas leaks out, but is relatively easily shut off.

If you hit USE with a shovel, somebody gets shocked or sparks shoot out, or something catches fire down the line, more often.

Gas is not potentially immediately deadly if someone just touches it or destructive just by coming in contact with the ground. It needs another two other factors, ignition and concentration, to be so.

Underground alert is in 50 states now and they require all utilities to be registered with them. They require utilities mapping so before excavation, (which includes ground rods) they can be marked.

If excavation is done without notification, a large fine will be imposed.

Larger fines will be imposed if you strike "Gold".

Yes, but... many states have exclusions/exemptions that state some facilities do not have to be a member.
It's still a crap shoot sometimes. Natural gas companies must not be, they never locate their lines

Really? PSE&G was the first utility in my yard spray painting markings on my lawn for buried NG supply after I called for a utility locate. I'm in NJ - maybe other NG suppliers aren't as diligent.

Around here they won’t mark at all.
It's subbed out to a locate company and the gas guys don’t seems to care if it's located or not.
Usually not their fault, their hands are tied by corporate.
Duke here owns PNG

I buried poly pipe then pulled some 3/8 copper.through it. When I went to burn in a tee at the tank, all they did was drop a 2ft sleeve over the original line!!!

I was annoyed and felted defeated, but realized mine was a alot better. Also laid down a trace wire and caution tape right under the surface/sod.

811 is a national utility mark out service. https://call811.com/ You can click on your state for information.

I must call before a pool dig. Even though I'm digging in a backyard, and utilities are coming in the front of the property, I still must call.

Some building departments have required the dig number when I submit for my permit to confirm the service was done.

You could have just run poly gas pipe. You would need the transition sweeps at both ends. Either tracer wire or tracer tape will work.

It was a 45ft.run for the Genny. I'm tired of stale gas for something that rarely runs.
