I'm wiring a Miller welder. It is 240 volt three phase or 240 volt single phase. For three phase the wires are black, white and red in that order top to bottom. For single phase they want the red to be taped and not used.
I asked them why they didn't reverse the white and red so the white wouldn't be used as a hot leg. They said this is code. I thought white should only be used as neutral. Why is Miller way the correct way by code?
Thanks, Jim Wilson

Welcome to the forum.

If you are talking about a factory supplied cord or internal wiring, that is not under NEC purview.

If you are talking about connecting a cord (i.e., one not furnished as an accessory part by the manufacturer), the NEC permits us to reidentify the white. All things considered, reidentifying the white is required if it is not a grounded conductor.

IMO that's pretty dumb to safe off a color that is typically used for an ungrounded conductor (red) and instead use a white conductor as the ungrounded conductor.

NEC 110.3 follow the manufactures instructions. They got their equipment listed in that way

I wired a switch for a pool cover where the manufacturer had it set up to switch the neutral. I called them and they said they thought it would be safer that way. Listed product--- so what do I do--- Now I have to run wires to a remote switch that switches the neutral-- clearly a violation of the nec.
