proper use of amp meters for a novice

Im trying to come up with a procedure for proper use of an amp meter for training discussion for our maintenance guys Im afraid that im being too general need some specific ideas Thanks KEG

What type of Ammeter ?? clamp on ?? Hard Wired?? Digital , analog?????

Turn off power pri to insertion in circuit
Start at highest scale

If the meter is going to be used on an energized circuit you should follow NFPA 70E. If you are chosing PPE under the task tables of NFPA 70 table 130.7(C)(9)(a) a double layer switching hood must be worn (see note 2*).

Does this mean I should stop sticking my clamp meter into energized panelboards?

Just be sure to turn off the panelboard first. :D

I like to leave mine out in the rain. Which probably explains why it doesn't work ...
