In the townships i work the reason for putting a nail plate on the back of the stud is to protect the romex entering in the box because it is within the 11/4 space. It is not to protect the box.

Bob,

"As long as the operator knows (or cares) about what he is doing" is the core of the problem. As A.Wayne pointed out these guys set the depth of the Roto-Zip at the max, lay the sheetrock up against the studs and start probing around (usually inside our boxes) to find out where they have to make the cut. Maybe up there in Mass. the sheetrockers are quality craftsmen but down here in NJ they're built for speed. They're in and out of an 8000 sq. ft, house in 4 days including one coat of mud.
