Good afternoon, I would like if you are familiar with the rule on 517.30, where I need to have three transfer switches to serve EQUIPMENT BRANCH, LIFE SAFETY BRANCH AND CRITICAL BRANCH in a hospital.
Would that also apply to a Psychiatric hospital, where there is no medical treatment room at all?

let me know what you thinks,

thanks

See the 517 definitions of Health Care Facilities and Hospital

Health Care Facilities
Buildings or portions of buildings
in which medical, dental, psychiatric, nursing, obstetrical,
or surgical care are provided. Health care facilities include,
but are not limited to, hospitals, nursing homes, limited
care facilities, clinics, medical and dental offices, and ambulatory
care centers, whether permanent or movable.

Hospital. A building or portion thereof used on a 24-hour
basis for the medical, psychiatric, obstetrical, or surgical
care of four or more inpatients. [101:3.3.124]

Seems as though the AHJ would / could require the facility to meet the criteria of all of 517

Whether or not an essential electrical system is required would be in other codes such as NFPA 101, 99, 110, ..... and AIA design info

Roger,Thank you for the prompt response. I now has another problem, the graphic 517.30 shows three (3) transfer switch, while the latest NFPA 99-2015 , show just two (2) transfer switches for a TYPE 2 system. Would you know where difference is?
Again Thank You

Danny, I don't see that illustration in NFPA 99, what is the specific article section, I assume it's in 6.4.3

Roger

Roger, this is it the exhibit 6.17. Hope you can open the attachment.

although I went ahead and provided the three transfer switch, I still don't understand why the "waste" in owner's money!!:ashamed:

Thanks

THE GENERATOR IS 1500 KVA!

AND I STILL DON’T KNOW WHAT GOOD DOES IT DOES, TO HAVE THREE TRANSFER SWITCHES. All it does is add cost to the project.
The "good" it does is mainly to ensure that a fault on one of the three systems does necessarily take out either of the others.
If there is no particular advantage to that in the psych hospital scenario, then there is no "GOOD".

Do note that it also allows you (by overriding the automatic function) to connect any one of the systems to the generator (as for testing or exercise) without transferring all three sets of loads.

sounds reasonable, thank you for the clarification.
