Is the primary reason to use a pull box so not to place excessive strain on The wire when pulling a long distance or exceeding 4 90's?

That's a reason but not always the reason. You might need a splice point, or you may have a common run that splits into separate runs.

Box terms aren't really defined by the NEC, since you said pull box many would say that it's sole purpose is for pulling in the conductors. A splice box or junction box may be used for pulling but for most it has another meaning similar to what Dave posted. if someone said to me I have a 4" run with 8-90° bends and I need a box in the middle I would call that a pull box.
