I had a customer call me about their well pump. It is fed off a single phase panel with a 2pole 30amp breaker. Are residential well pumps normally just 240 volt single phase?

The few I've wired were 240V 30A single phase.

I don't recall ever seeing one made for any other voltage.

Depends on the type pump you have. Mine is a deep well pump and is multi-volt. 120v slide the switch in the capacitor housing and run on 240v sp. Depending on the size the 30amp OCP may be to large. Mine runs 240v on a DP15

30 amp is plenty high. Almost all of the residential wells in this area are 240V. Some older small ones are 120V.

I have installed both voltages for centrifugal pumps. A lot of the motors have simple methods for changing voltage. Either swapping a wire or two around or the position of a slide switch. Naturally the 120v draws twice the amps of a 240v. They have made it so easy that most of the time the pump installer will do all the electrical up to the timer or disconnect and all I have to do is the run to the panel and double check his work.
Submersable pumps generally run on 240v for residental but I have seen some smaller ones that run 120v in shallower wells.
