This isn't electrical related, but I know you guys know the answer. Reparing a break in my irrigation system and need to bend a piece of PVC. As a train driver never had to do it before. Seen the heater used before, but do not have one. Can a person use an oven or heat gun to bend a short piece about a foot long. At what temp does it become workable?

Re: PVC Bending

Hello Dereck. You can use a heat gun or any source of heat.

I recently built a frame for my boat tarp using PVC and a Turkey Fryer.

Figure out aproximatly where you need the bend in a piece of pipe, start moving the pipe back and forth 6 to 12 inches above the heat or move the heat gun back and forth around 4 to 6 inches above the PVC.

Rotate the PVC pretty much continuously while your heating it, it will become limp and workable.

Use gloves, and when you make your bend becareful not to kink it.

BTW, how did your peppers do this year?

I had a banner year here.

I don't know what the exact temperature you need to get, but a standard hair dryer or even the exhaust from your tail pipe will do the job.

In my experience, a "real" heat gun works about 100 times better than a hair dryer. I once spent about 20 minutes never getting 1/2" PVC soft enough to bend, and about 2 minutes successfully with a heat gun.

I thought this was weird until I remembered I just cooked a turkey using a pvc bending blanket.

Re: PVC Bending

I usually prefer the halogen work lights. Man those things get hot.

An older j-man I worked with taught me this when the heater was down.

Take a piece of metal flashing and bend it to fit inside the grill of the work lights. (to hold heat in) insert and rotate pipe.

edit: cant spell

Re: PVC Bending

When all else fails a metal pancake box and some pvc glue on fire does the trick as long as you keep rotaing the pipe or else it will burn, don`t tell the E.P. A. though

Re: PVC Bending

As long as you are carefull nobodies the wiser.Just don`t stay to long in the flame and the pvc is fine, hey I know a guy that can bend 90`s in 4 in pvc with a torch and never blister or change the conduits exterior look.So who is to say a flame or a hot box is compliant ;)

Re: PVC Bending

I go to RENT A DRAGON when I need some serious heat for bending PVC or cooking turkeys :p .

Re: PVC Bending

ive used an oven in a pinch before. kinda sucks if you have to bend in the middle of a stick but just set that bad boy on broil and kinda close the stick in parallel with the door and your golden.

btw thank god for my new hot box, all the services im doing lately make my heat gun seem like the 56k of bending pvc.

Re: PVC Bending

Bob and Scott, you can use an EMT bender, of course it can't be real cold when you do it.

You just use a bender one size larger than the PVC. You over bend the PVC holding it for a minute or so, as you let off it will spring back a little so you might need to bend it a little further. As Jim says, it won't produce an exposed quality look, but it does work.
