I here alot of you guys talking about using pvc for your installs like outlet boxes and risers on overhead services. Why do you prefer to use pvc over metal boxes and RMC for your installs...I just think metal is more durable.

Re: pvc boxes and pvc risers?

Hot wires and grounded metal don't mix. Plastic offers an added degree of insulation.

Re: pvc boxes and pvc risers?

Well yes but wouldn't you want to know if there is a fault in your box or nick in the wire.

Re: pvc boxes and pvc risers?

Dave every area is different, in my part of the country SE cable is the most common way to do house services, that is, after all what it is made for.

After that RNC and last in choice is RMC.

I do not claim one way is better than the other, but I have grown up with SE being the typical install and have never seen trouble with it.

I was in a code class that the teacher had a piece of SE cable that a cable TV installer had drilled through live and that was quite a mess.

I personally do not like RNC aboveground, I either use SE cable or RMC for services.

Re: pvc boxes and pvc risers?

I never understood why some areas want RMC masts even on a tall place where verticle clearance isn't an issue. Its a bigger mess to cleanup when they get ripped down...
