well temporarily anyway. I just dug a trench for a subpanel feed from a house to a separate building, about 150 feet by 2 feet wide trench. Dug 2' down and plan on using 1 1/2" sch40 pvc conduit. Problem is with all the rain lately and the high water table some water pooled up and filled a low section of the trench. Am I allowed to glue up my conduit and submerge it under the water for the open trench inspection? I would do all glue work out of the trench and then put in the conduit so the water wouldnt get inside. How do I handle this one?

Type RNC is permitted for use in wet locations. The concern will be with insulation type on the conductors themselves.

310.8(C) specifies what types will be permitted for this installation.

In all cases, 300.5(D)(5) requires insulated conductors to be listed for wet locations. :)

Wire is #2 copper THHN/THWN so that should be ok. I have never heard of RNC other than "rigid non metallic conduit, is there a different type of PVC conduit? I thought sch40 would be considered a rigid non metallic conduit, but are you referring to something different?

more of a design observation than a code issue, but...

we pull mainly communications cable, fiber, etc, and we never install anything but direct-burial rated hygroscopic cable in an underground conduit. we assume that the pipe will fill up with water eventually, and even in new construction we often find them full of water when we arrive to pull through.

jrdsq: Tell me more about hygroscopic cable. I am not familiar with it.
