Is it permitted per NEC/UL to cut conduit entrances into PVC boxes (Example:
Carlon number E981DF) with manufactured conduit entrances? Please advise.

Re: PVC Conduit entrance

Products are required to be used in accordance with their listing and the manufacturer's written instructions which are pare of the listing. You will have to explore that through the manufacturer's instructions or UL. My gut says no to your question but I don't know (I'm just trying to point you in the right direction). :D

Re: PVC Conduit entrance

When you sat cut entrances into a box do you mean make an opening ?

Re: PVC Conduit entrance

The E981 is a single gang PVC box. I assume he means punching a conduit opening into the side. I dont think this would be permitted. 110.3(B)

Re: PVC Conduit entrance

This is Carlons response to the above question.

Carlon makes FS boxes, such as our Type FD (E9801) and FS (E9802) that do not have any hubs and are treated as junction boxes. It requires to have openings cut into these boxes. Since all FS boxes are manufactured to the same requirements and are designed for nonmetallic conduit I would say yes.

I would not say this for Carlon's blue outlet boxes since these boxes are designed strictly for the use with nonmetallic sheathed cable and should not be field modified for electrical applications.

Re: PVC Conduit entrance

If you were to punch your own holes in a box like this, and it was a wet location, how do you make it watertight? ie, is there a "Meyers Hub" that is plastic for something like this?
