If I'm not mistaken and if I am someone will correct me but I remember reading somewhere in the NEC the article is not connecting with me right now, that PVC is not allowed to be installed in a plenum I believe it's somewhere in art 330

PVC conduit falls under article 352, and as of the 2008 NEC there are no limitations for running it in a riser. 352.12 is the section.

Edited to add: PVC is not listed for use in 300.22 (B) for air-handling spaces.

I agree with jfletcher.... Basically plastics are not allowed in a plenum however, there are some wiring types that are listed for plenum.

I have seen plumbers use plastic drains in a plenum ceiling...not compliant afaik
