i have a question that i get two answers for.when joining schd.40 pvc conduit what cement do i use.gray medium body cement or clear pvc cement that is used in plumbing.i think that is a soft body? thank you for your help...

Re: pvc conduit

Why are you using a cement designed for plumbing pipe? There may or may not be a difference between plumbing and electrical RMC cements. I always buy cement from my electrical supply house so there is no question as to whether it is made for RMC.

You might want to take a look at the Carlon webpage on cements

Edited to get rid of long URL.

Re: pvc conduit

there was a guy at work that said you could use regular pvc glue to join conduit and i told him you could not.i always use the other.wanted to know if anyone else had heard of this.and if there was anything in NEC that states what to use?

Re: pvc conduit

While most PVC comes out of the same factory's there is a difference in glues is one step and two step, one requires a cleaner to be use to pre-activate the PVC before the glue is used and the other does not need it. The glue that Carlon has at the supply houses is just a one step PVC activator and glue all in one. The plumber inspectors around here require a two step cleaner/glue with a purple dye in it to let them know that the cleaner has been used.

But as far as the NEC goes I think it has to be listed for the purpose as the fittings has to be listed. Could we call the cement part of a fitting?

Re: pvc conduit

Oatey's web site lists their regular, medium and heavy bodied glues to be suitable for DWV, conduit or pressure piping. These glues are available in clear or gray.

Re: pvc conduit

Sounds identified for the purpose to me. :D
I guess I should of had Identified instead of listed in my last post too.

Re: pvc conduit

I have also found that some PVC glue is only rated up to a certain size. Look at the manufactures recommended use. Clear PVC glue that is for PVC most of the time is not intended to be used on pvc over 4 inch. I think it has to do with the design tolerances of the large pipe. The glue that is rated up to 6 inch I think is gray? Anyhow,I know it was thicker
