Hi All,

Can anyone help me identify if it would be a problem if we use PVC conduit in drywall partitions in a hospital project? This will save us a cost compared to EMT Conduit. Will it be against the NEC rule? What could be the implications?

Regards

Take a look at 517.13 (A) and 517.10 (B).

I did not look at sections mentioned in post 2, but presuming that was addressing patient care circuits that require a wiring method that in itself qualifies as an EGC. PVC can not be used on said circuits because it doe not qualify as an EGC.

Also should you have a place of assembly within the facility you couldn't use PVC methods within that location either. Outside those two applications probably fine.

To qualify 517.13(A), can we use a separate Grounding conductor? or it shall necessarily be an EMT?

Art 517 requires a grounding conductor in a 250.118 metal raceway or cable.
Two wire type conductors are not an acceptable means.

A second EGC does not comply with the wording. The raceway or cable system used shall in itself qualify as an EGC as well as contain a conductor type EGC.

You cannot use a separate or second equipment grounding conductor. The wiring method itself must be an equipment grounding conductor and must also contain an equipment grounding conductor of the wire type.
