I dont have my code book handy but somewhere in art 332 it says you must use SCH 80 pvc in areas where subject to physical damage. In my opinion areas subject to physical damage would be anything above ground meaning you couldnt use sch 40 in above ground installs anymore. Any comments?

I disagree but I will say that is subject to the AHJ. If the pvc is up against a building and not in a driveway I would say there should be no issue. If you stub up in an open area then it also may be subject to damage. It is not cut and dry.

I have heard AHJ say the same thing. Funny thing is schedule 80 is hard to find at times. Seems no one uses the stuff.

PS: I wish they could just spell out "Subject to physical damage" under definitions

334.15 Exposed Work.

In exposed work, except as provided in 300.11(A), cable shall be installed as specified in 334.15(A) through (C).

(A) To Follow Surface. Cable shall closely follow the surface of the building finish or of running boards.

(B) Protection from Physical Damage. Cable shall be protected from physical damage where necessary by rigid metal conduit, intermediate metal conduit, electrical metallic tubing, Schedule 80 PVC conduit, or other approved means. Where passing through a floor, the cable shall be enclosed in rigid metal conduit, intermediate metal conduit, electrical metallic tubing, Schedule 80 PVC conduit, or other approved means extending at least 150 mm (6 in.) above the floor.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, kind of confusing dennis. Our ahj here doesn't allow anything coming out of the ground here be sch 40, even if its against a building or whatever. I still think that anything exposed could be considered subject to physical damage

I Know. Thats the first thing I looked at:)

I agree with you, although I now put 80 anytime i am coming out of the ground outside, the guys who cut my lawn cut right through a 3/4 pvc sched 40 conduit with his weed wacker over time. 80 might last a couple more months:)

this is refering to cable, not pvc itself
