Hey.

I'm going to change out a (pole mounted, Modular home) service for a friend, and I'm trying to save him some $$.

I will be mounting the service to the side of the house and going thru the eave with a 2 1/2" RMC (poco required) mast

I've got a 2 1/2" PVC weather head in the shop, and I'd like to use it if I can.

The mast will be supporting the service drop, and I will adapt the PVC to the threaded RMC.

Anyone ever done this?

steve

I don't see an issue with this at all. If you have a pvc riser with a metal weatherhead, then I think there would a problem but not as you stated.

It is admirable that you want to save your friend money. Charge him less and use the metallic parts. I am not aware of any PVC weather heads that are suitable for RMC.

I'm with pjg. It's done all the time here, too. PVC weather heads do not glue on, they have a bolt that clamps them to the pipe. It's effective and aesthetically pleasing.

Go for it!

I'm an electrical contractor in Wa State. I take down services that have had PVC weather heads rockin over 30 years, so yes they last.

2" PVC and RMC weather heads are very common so they are cheaper($7-$25) but when you get into 2.5" the price jumps your looking at $15-20 for PVC but that RMC will be $45.00. I pay $5.00 for PVC 2" LBs but a PVC 2.5" LB is $22.00. So you can see the jump from 2" to 2.5" in all pipe parts.

The PVC weatherheads all come with a bolt and nut on the bottom connecting side. If they were only made for PVC this wouldn't be nessacary as the glue is what holds PVC together so take a guess guys what the BOLTS are for? Yes thats right to fit on RMC. If thats what its made for then I would think its okay to use it.

And as far as looks, come on, only us electricians think our electrical installations look "GOOD". If you tell anyone who isn't an electrician that your service is "beautiful" there gonna look at you sideways like a dork. Everyone I know paints the hell out of their service just so they don't notice it. So good chance is getting painted and it will all be yellow or brown and you wouldn't know that the cap is diffrent material that the mast from 12' down on the ground.

Just my 2 cents-

p.s. good luck on your side job. :)

Unless the PVC weather head is listed for use with steel raceways it is a direct violation of the NEC to use it with a steel raceway.

Around here I see a similar situation. Underground service riser at pole will have first 10' in RMC then two or three sticks of PVC continuing up the pole.

No female adapter either, POCO just slides the bell end of the PVC over the end of the RMC. This is when no standoffs are being used, pipe mounted directly to pole. I always scratched my head on that one.

Isn't this sort the same as sticking a PVC weatherhead on RMC?

Here is the info from the link by pig.
They are listed and seem to be legit...

As an inspector, we have no local codes about this, so they would be fine as far as I am concerned.
