I am writing an evaluation for my company (an electrical contractor)

Does anyone know how many electricians ther eare in the US and then world wide?

I saw a listing on the US job market that stated about 700,000 in the US. I was curious as to if this is just lisenced or apprentices as well?

I cannot find any info about how many there are in other countries.

Any answers or ideas of where I can find answers would be a huge help.

thanks,

Call your local library and ask for the Reference Desk. This is the sort of question that they handle all the time.

You could also log onto your local library's web site, and see if they particpate in a 24/7 "virtual reference" program. That would allow you to conduct an on-line chat with a librarian (who may or may not be in the same part of the country as yourself), and get your questions answered on-line. They can even take remote control of your own computer screen and bring you to a web site that has the answers you are seeking.

If your library does not participate in the 24/7 reference, then try looking up "24/7 reference" or perhaps "virtual reference" on Google or Teoma.

Quality may be a subjective issue!!,

also the catagorey of electrician may include all associated with the industry such as linemen etc.

Thanks for all your help eveyone! it seems like its harder to track then then I would have thought. I am going to try the library link though.

Yes that link was the one I originally found that lists 700,000 in the US. but it did not specify as the 700,000 being lisenced only or everyone in the field.
and then I start to wonder about the quantity of low voltage workers as well.

well, back to the books!!

It is my opinion that there are many levels of electricians, from assembly line electricians that do 2X4 lays in and switch outlet installations (tenant build outs), actually knowing little about electricity and/or the NEC, then you have foremen, service electricians, knowledgeable service electricians, fire alarm tech, electrical testers?ect.

I meet many electricians that claim they are the best but few hold up when asked basic questions regarding electrical installation they are involved in, NEC or technical, but usually they are good enough or at least passable in they end of they market they operate in. It is the electricians that delve into a field they know little about that waste the customer?s money, and sometimes endanger themselves or the end user.

I read somewhere that most of the members of the IBEW are actual factory workers, involved in the manufacture of electrical parts.
