As I understand it every elevator pit needs a gfci for maintenance, and a simplex receptacle if a sump pump is installed. Also a sealed light with an emergency battery pack. My question is regarding the devices mounted below 48" needing to be Nema 4. So far all I can find is a nema 4 box, with a waterproof cover that makes a seal with a waterproof cord cap installed for the sump pump. That all makes perfect sense to me. But how would I install a gfci that would meet a nema 4 rating.

Thank in advance.

What kind of elevator are you talking about? Passenger elevator in a building? No experience with them but seems unlikely to need to require a sump pump, unless some (idiot) designer built the thing on a former swamp.

Now if talking about a pit at grain elevator, which I am pretty familiar with, sump pumps are a necessity. But you typically don't put any wiring in the pit that isn't necessary either. Sump pump is usually submersible, plugged in above grade and dropped in when needed.

A sump is required for every elevator pit with firefighters service. I have done 50 or so and never had one without it.

Like I said no experience with them - but you said enough right there to make more sense out of it.

Very few elevators in my area - the ones that are here - elevator contractors are the ones that install and work on them. Other then the main supply circuit they are not even inspected by state electrical inspectors everything involving the elevator is inspected by elevator inspectors.
