The State Building Code reference 780 CMR 3603.16, as listed by Ddavis9, but that article aslo tells you to go to NFPA 72 Chapter 11. that is for smoke detectors.
you may also want to check 527 CMR 31.00, Board of Fire Prevention Regulations. As of 3-20-06 there was a new requirement on the carbon monoxide detectors if the residence is burning fossil fuels. I don't have the web site only the article. It lists each level of the residence, rooms with burner unit, it is basically the same as a smoke, but you could cover the areas with the combination smoke/carbon detector.
