Does NC have a residential electrician classification? In SC, we have one, that with a bond, allows unlimited residential work.

I know there is reciprocity with SC regarding builder's licenses. So that is not a problem.

Are builders/GC's allowed to do electrical work? We can do it all in the county and have to have the additional licenses in a city.

I am contemplating buying a lot in western NC and just wondering what I would be allowed to do versus subbing out.

Thanks,

Yes

No-- you need an electrical license to do electrical work unless it is your primary home.

You don?t have to do your own electrical work.

You can be the GC.

I?ll be the EC.

I?ll over charge you by 10% and give you a kickback

sorry I had to:smile:

And I would have to have you shot and dropped off the side of a mountain. Oh, I forgot to mention I have alot of cousins up north.

As Dennis said, you can wire your own residence so you would not need a license for that.

See 87-43 and the exceptions here

I believe you are misled, builders/gc's or anyone for that matter of than EC's/homeowners, cannot legally obtain electrical permits in SC. A GC is not a EC

My first license was the Single Family dwelling. It is good to have, but having had it I would say go ahead for the Limited. I believe all the requirements are the same and there are some restrictions to the SFD that make it agrivating. Only SINGLE family dwellings. No duplexes, etc. Unless they have changed I think detatched garage/building was excluded.

Well, I think you better check with the Residential Builders Commission. I have a Residential Electrician's License. I can pull permits in a city (since I have a bond) for unlimited value on residential work. I am capped at $5000 for commercial work. I am also a licensed builder. This came into effect about 2 or so years ago. In a county, as always, a builder can do all of the permits...plumbing, electrical, and HVAC. At least it is the way the upstate works.
