I live in Massachusetts and my friend Phil is moving to NC. His is in school getting his hours towards his Jman. And the teacher said to him that he just got his Jman license for NC and SC. Is it possible to have a license for a different state if you dont live there?

Why should you not be able to get a license in another state? Out on the eastern seaboard, I would think there's plenty of people who have to work in two three, even four states that are in their trade area. Thay can't live in all of them. That may not be a problem if you live in the middle of a large state, but out east, some states are pretty small, area-wise.

I think this is common in New England.

I live in MA and have lic. in MA, NH, VT, RI, CT, as do most of my co-workers. We do quite a bit of out of state work.

Wouldn't just the employer need all those licenses or all the employees as well to work out of state?

The company needs Master and/or Contractor licences depending on the state, however all of these states require journeyman lic. to perform work and no more than 1 unlicensed apprentice per journeyman on the site. RI, NH, and I think CT also require apprentices to be registered with the state.

I think the fact that every New England state has a separate license is ridiculous (just look at the size of the states on the map). There should be a regional NE license for all 6 states considering the requirements to get a license state to state are almost identical.

But I realize this makes too much sense so it will never happen.

The Teacher gave out bad information. The State Board does not work off of Jman Cards or License if thats in reference to a IBEW issued card and or other wise.

Things are different down here.

Phil can read about NC requirements here www.NCBEEC.org

Note the second page of Employer Statement Form application which lists what quailifies an individual to take the test.

This form along with an application are required.

You think that's bad?

Ohio doesn't have a state JW license, but several municipalities require JW licenses. Just the local area I work in has four.

Pete, you ready to pack it up? Carolinas looking pretty good about now...

You know the difference between a Yankee and a damn Yankee?

A Yankee comes down, spends money, then goes home.

A damn Yankee comes down and doesn't go home.

(Some local humor)

I was born/raised in Va. Beach by parents from Phili and Long Island. People around here don't know how to deal with me, not really a Southerner, not really a Yankee.

I still here that joke by the locals even tho I have been here 30 years. That Yankee mouth never leaves ya. I just smile and remind them who got their butt kicked on their own turf during the Civil War. That usually shuts them up.:D

Also, if you are licensed in NC I believe we have reciprocity with SC as well as other states.

Pursuant to G.S. 87-50, the Board may grant licenses of the same or equivalent classification to electrical contractors licensed by other states without written examination. The Board has entered into formal reciprocal licensing agreements with contractor licensing boards of several states whereby electrical contractors licensed by these other state boards may obtain a North Carolina electrical contracting license without written examinations. Following is information about the reciprocal agreements currently available. Click on the state name for detailed information about eligibility and application packets. You will need to have Adobe Acrobat installed on your pc to view and print the packets.
