I am bidding an old work job that involves about 50 low voltage cans. I am thinking about giving Online Electrical Supply a shot. Their low voltage cans are a lot less expensive than halo's. Does anyone have any experiance with their products? Bidding has been a bit tight lately and I would love to get this job.

Maybe I dont know how to play the game. When I get a set of prints I go through it with a fine comb. And I do the same when I visit the job. And I dont miss a thing. So I charge accordingly. I know a lot of other ECS put a lot of clauses in their contracts of what is considered extra and such. So when they put bids in they seem lower at first.

We done a renovation house with 88 LV cans. Depending on the type they can be a pita. Also exspensive.
Bid based on your profit margin. Not others.
If you let them talk you down on the price. You won't be happy to get the job.

Try e-conolight.com. I have bought tons of cans from them and always have had great luck with them. Theyre prices blow most out of the water. They have good trim prices too. If I order on monday, I have them on friday.

I used the Econo-light LV 4" cans and all I can say is they suck to install. I put about 30 in. They are OK once in but the Old work cans have crappy clips to hold them in. The light olier versions go in, in half the time but are twice the price. Go figure.

Cheap China junk - you get what you pay for. Cheap materials equate to expensive and difficult installation. As for call backs - ouch.

I have learned the hard way.

Tony,
you and I both know you are charging a fair price.
We also know there are plenty of trunk-slammers, hacks and wanna-be's.
Price yourself at what YOU need, not what THEY want.

Like you, I used to, spend a great deal of time pouring over the prints, visiting the site, talking with the HO.....most times the result was my number being higher than the next guy. When the job was complete, the numbers were close and most of what I had added to the job was installed.
The difference?
I didn't actually do the job.
Of course, I am NOT telling you what to do here - just what I have done.
I now bid the jobs "per print" and everything else is a move/add/change [MAC] and priced accordingly.
If 3 ECs bid the same job and if all 3 ECs bid "per plan', the numbers *should* be very close...once the ECs start with the MACs based on thier own preferences and opinions - it's no longer the same job.

JMHO.

Not me I got a great Poker face.

Tony I got an idea, you give me all your leads and I'll drive up north & quote them a price way higher than yours was, and the whole time I'll give arrogant obscure code referencing BS answers to the rather simple electrical questions they will be asking.

Remember:

Step 1- collect underpants.
Step 2- ?
Step 3-Profit.

It's a con game the GC's play to lower the price. If you tried to hold the price down it's as low as it should be. Chances are you missed something but the GC won't let you off the hook. Some EC's lowball the job and pray for change orders to break even.
