Hey all,
A client called the other day. Edison was out to install a smart meter and they found some overheated connection inside so she has to get it fixed or get penalized 25 a month for not having the smart meter. I swung by and had a look. It's a Milbank U-200 overhead service. I can save a ton of work and money for her if I can just replace the guts. I've seen a few new for sale on ebay but I'm just wondering if anyone knows the part number for the terminal blocks or if the insides of a new Milbank are interchangeable. I did see someone asked this question a couple years ago but the parts links posted were dead. For ref this is a link to the exact enclosure I have out there.

Thanks!

I always buy a new meter and take the guts out to put in the old meterbase. If everything is the same (ie; bypass or not, type of bypass) it should bolt right up. I have had to drill the holes of the mounting block out slightly to get the holes to line up but they're usually correct or very close.

I kind of figured a new Milbank would have to be darn close to matching up since they can't really change much in dimensions anyway I would guess. This is not a bypass. I can't say I have seen one here for residential.

Pretty standard enclosure here in NYC can u not get millbank out by you?

Yes they are around here. I'm pretty certain that's what my electric supply house carries and I know even Home Depot has them. I guess worse case is I pick one up and take it out there and see if it looks like a match. Thanks.

I have good news and bad news, at least in my local jurisdiction:

The good news is that the power company supplies meter bases free.

The bad news is that the AHJ says that they're not listed as field replaceable parts.

The power company can replace the parts, but we can't if the power company requires an inspection to re-energize.

^^^yup, what Larry said.....I would call your local rep go here ,you might be #142, explain the situation, see what they have to offer

good luck

" Speaking of listed parts. I was called out by one of my clients ,who forgot to pay there bill. They were told by the field tec that power could not be restored, due to one of the bypass lever handles was missing, (Ice Cream was melting) this was around 4 PM. After visiting the site I had two issues. The first,I could not get the meter base cover safely off without sticking a screw driver in between the socket and the meter base cover to see what part i needed. The second was finding the correct part. After 3 attempts on the phone with the utility company I was able to get a emergency work order put in and was told I would receive a phone call. I then decided to take a quick drive to the utility company and see if I could get a meter base in order to cannibalize the parts. No luck with that since they were closed. So after informing my clients manager I headed back to the job site to wait on the utility company. Upon arriving'I saw that the meter base cover was off and unattended. The store manager informed me that she called a handy man that they used and he was across the street at the autozone looking for a handle for the lever. He came back with a part that looked like it might have fit. Shaking my head I told him that that is not the proper listed part and in addition installing it would be dangerous since some of the hardware was close to a live lug on the meter base. I informed the manager but she then instructed this handy man to install this part he bought from across the street. I did receive a call from the utility company field representative. I informed both the store owners and the utility company that the manager fired me and was no longer on site. In turn the manager called me and told me that they got the lever installed. I have yet to here whether or not the utility company restored power. Very frustrated. Here I am trying to be safe, use the proper listed parts and wanted to follow proper protocol and this guy shows up..Just venting"

Stop and think about how ridiculous this sounds on his part. The entire assembly is easily removable and replaced with like parts from Milbank. A simple 1 hour job could turn into a 3 hour job just because he claims the parts are not listed as replaceable parts. I would contact Milbank and see if these parts are field replaceable. I've replaced several of these over the past 5 years or so and never had a problem. But, then again, I never had to get an AHJ involved.
