Question on proper coupling installation in panel

Do you guys think that the lock nut on this coupling should be on the inside or the outside of the panel. Which method is more preferable? Is either method considered a violation?

I know that there's couplings that have the hex on the outside and the lock nut on the inside, but that's not what we had available.

Unless the installation instructions say otherwise either way is acceptable. Most electricians around here do not bother to use those type of fittings.
