I was installing a floor receptacle on the main floor of a house with a finished basement. I went to the basement pulled out a recessed fixture to access the space between the basement and first level and saw that there was a romex cable in contact with the housing of the recessed fixture. The recessed fixture had a 65 W lamp.

Does anyone think this is a fire hazard? Will the housing get hot enough to melt the outer sheath of the romex?

If anyone has had any experience with this please let me know.

Thank you.

I have never seen a situation that was compromised because the wire touched the can, however, I generally try to avoid having nm cable come in contact with cans. I would venture a guess that the thermal protectors built into the more modern cans would protect the cans from getting so hot that it would damage the cable.
