I have a couple of questions about raceways, boxes, conduit bodies, and Fittings installed in wet locations. Let me start from the beginning. NEC 2011 Article 300.9, Raceways in Wet Locations above grade. It states that the interior of a raceway is considered a wet location, if the raceway itself is installed in a wet location above grade. Second, NEC 2011 Article 225.22, Raceways on Exterior Surfaces of Buildings or other Structures. It states that these raceways be arranged to drain. If you think about it , these raceways, when arranged to drain, without drilling holes in the raceway itself, have to be installed in an unlevel manner, so they will drain properly. They usually drain into a termination point like boxes, conduit bodies, other enclosures. Now 2011 NEC Article 314.15, Damp or Wet Locations, states boxes, conduit bodies, and fittings shall be placed or equipped so as to prevent moisture from entering or accumulating within the box, conduit body, or fitting. It also states that these boxes, conduit bodies, and fittings shall be listed for wet locations. I refer back to 314.15 where it states boxes, conduit bodies, and fittings be placed or equipped so as to prevent moisture from entering or accumulating within, the box, conduit body,or fitting. I know for years FS type boxes and conduit bodies have been installed in wet locations, but unlike other wet location listed enclosures that have made provisions for moisture entering or accumulating in them ( ex. the manufacturing of weep holes in them) these FS type boxes, and conduit bodies have not made any provisions that I have seen. They do make raceway connectors and KO inserts with built in weep holes. My first question is. Are these connectors and inserts required, for these FS type boxes, conduit bodies, or any enclosure or fitting installed in wet locations. If not, should they? The last question is since the interior of a raceway is considered a wet location when the raceway is installed ia a wet location above grade, shouldn't the interior of enclosures (ex. boxes, conduit bodies, etc.) if the enclosure is installed in a wet location, also be considered a wet location. Just something to make you go HMMMMM. Anyone's comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
