I had a quick question in reference to low voltage wiring found in an attic that came up during inspection. The wiring is not going to the can lights in the picture. There is a piece of 12-2 entering the pvc box in the picture and contains a 11.6v transformer and it comes out of the transformer in 12 awg thhn and runs to some low voltage recessed can lights in 5 kitchen cabinets.

The home inspector did not open the box and indicated it needed to be run in conduit, granted if it came to replacing it since it would be out anyways we would just be rerunning it in romex. My question is since it is low voltage can we get away with leaving it as is and what section of code would back this up for a residential situation? I know Ive seen exposed low voltage wiring (lights, doorbells, signals, exc) run exposed in a commercial atmosphere and pass inspection.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

I doubt you have a class 2 power supply here.
