once you enter a roof top unit do you have to continue to run a raceway to the back of a disconect or can you run them without a raceway inside the R.T.U.

Very good question, I would like to see the opinions on this question also. My opinion is if it is thhn/thwn and the motor leads are present in the smae area then why couldn't you? Some inspectors in our area say that is not acceptable because when the disconnect is turned off you still have live conductors "in the unit". True but I don't see anything in 440 II that says the disconnecting means must turn off all live conductors "in the unit" and there are not any "exposed" live parts except for the line side of the disco. Curious for other opinions

Trun that down on Reem and Ruud units all the time. Only factory install and listed wireing allowed outside the wire j-box.

Yeah, I'd turn it down based on the definition of Disconnecting Means. Further, I couldn't think of any code that would allow an RTU to be used as a raceway. The intent is to make the unit safe for a serviceman.

In my opinion you need a raceway until you get to the wiring compartment.

I agree but with many units the minute you enter the unit from below you are in the 'wiring compartment'

Bob,

My defintion of the "wiring compartment" is the enclosure within the equipment that contains the contactor and other control elements.

We got problems. I plan on doing this on 2 of the 8 RTU's at the club. If your dept. tags these installs, what do you think the factory KO's under the unit are for?

Most of the RTUs I have seen are designed as Bob has explained, I have also seen some that are not. The installer needs to be able to distinguish this difference when installing the wiring to the units.

I THINK I know what you are talking about. In some units there is a chase from the conduit entrance leading to the portion that contains the contactors. I have been red tagged ONCE for using thhn there. He said it had to be different rated wire like those installed from the factory (mtw?) so I had to install a little flex.
