My question is , Are the holes in steel studs of a wall considered a "raceway" and would the conductors installed in such holes need to be calculated as per 310.15. 2 a.

Also would holes drilled in wood studs or joists be considered a raceway?

Raceway. An enclosed channel of metal or nonmetallic materials designed expressly for holding wires, cables, or busbars, with additional functions as permitted in this Code. Raceways include, but are not limited to, rigid metal conduit, rigid nonmetallic conduit, intermediate metal conduit, liquidtight flexible conduit, flexible metallic tubing, flexible metal conduit, electrical nonmetallic tubing, electrical metallic tubing, underfloor raceways, cellular concrete floor raceways, cellular metal floor raceways, surface raceways, wireways, and busways.

I think you lose the raceway concept at the second word of the definition.

thanks for the replies,

Yes, I read the code books definition of race ways, but most of the examples given were conduits, troughs , etc. no mention of the most common installation method used ie. drilled holes in studs. So its left up to the inspector to decide if it appies as in (not limited to ) I found a great study - http://www.copper.org/applications/electrical/building/pdf/bundle_evaluation_report.pdf

but this is not code just a study.

Thanks for any further thoughts.
