Has anyone here ever been tagged for using a single bell wp covers for a switch on a listed wet location box?We just were tagged on friday for having single device covers on exterior switches and not in use covers. The AHJ says they are not listed for switches. There are gaskets that have a punchout for a toggle switch that come with the cover it`s a bell 5155 cover.

Re: RACO/BELL single device WP covers

Looking at the Raco Bell site I find none of the type you describe listed for switches, only listed for single outlets.

Yeah I know the gaskets have a punch out for a switch.

Go here for the info. Look at applications

The only Raco Bell WP covers listed for switches are enclosed with an external handle to operate the enclosed switch.

Like this one here

Re: RACO/BELL single device WP covers

I believe the gaskets are universal. This would keep them from having to make different gaskets for each type of cover.

Re: RACO/BELL single device WP covers

I think the gasket is universal also.

But, what about using a Decora rocker switch with a GFCI cover?
One of my guys asked me this, he saw it done at another company.

Re: RACO/BELL single device WP covers

Same problem as above, Raco Bell does not call it a WP Decora cover, they call it a WP GFCI cover.

Go here and look at applications.

Re: RACO/BELL single device WP covers

I guess the AHJ was correct this was the first time we have been tagged for this.Has been passed where this same cover was used for a 2p30amp sw on a well as a disconnect.Guess it`s in use from now on or their other switch plate.$$$$ will control which.

Luke

I don't see a problem with the decor switch and GFI cover. They fit each other. The problem with the single device cover is it doesn't fit. There is large gap around the single pole switch( picture a round hole over a 1 pole switch ).

Re: RACO/BELL single device WP covers

NECbuff I think there are two problems.

1)It is not listed for the application.

2)If you need to operate the switch in the rain you expose the switch to the weather.

Re: RACO/BELL single device WP covers

Inuse covers will not hold up.I have had more than 1 break while installing. They do make a nice cover with a red handle that goes over regular switches and is WP
Allen we just passed a similar install only 2 weeks ago on a school in Tampa.Thinking back on this it was a bad choice as these were tamper proof. Some one could easily get shocked using that metal key.I too thought it was ok based on it having the break out gasket for a switch.

Re: RACO/BELL single device WP covers

This was at the pasco county 911 com.center.There was one other issue walker floor boxes that had their locations changed by the county after the slab was poured and was inspected prior to the slab being poured. They were left open so the AHJ could see that they would be under 2+ ins of concrete he wanted the new locations approved by the county???? This is a county project.I don`t get it.

Re: RACO/BELL single device WP covers

he over steped his powers on the relocation. If it is wrong that is between your customer and your company, his athority is to make sure it was to code.
Waiting for this hurricane to pass ,wish it just get here and get over

Re: RACO/BELL single device WP covers

What got me was that he is from a county office and this is a county job so hes his own customer so to speak.Let you know Tuesday what the chief says.

Re: RACO/BELL single device WP covers

John thanks for the link I downloaded it and I see two styles of switch covers.

One type has a lift up cover, not listed as weather proof.

The other type is totally enclosed with an outside handle that is listed as weatherproof.

I do not think there is a lift up switch cover that will be listed as WP.

Re: RACO/BELL single device WP covers

I have installed these single receptacle covers over switches quite a few times in my career but never realized that they were not listed for the purpose. I can understand why the gasket between the cover and the box is universal but why does the gasket in the flip lid have removal piece in the center? I can?t think of any reason you would need to remove this for a receptacle.

Re: RACO/BELL single device WP covers

That is what had me confused, the lid having the removable gasket for a toggle switch
