Hello,

I am taking over a kitchen remodel that another electrical contractor roughed in. He has the hard wired range hood being fed from one of the two small appliance circuits. Is there an exception in the code somewhere authorizing this.

I have not been able find anything in the code book.

Thanks for the help.

Well if there's a gas range, and if you can argue the hood is "supplemental equipment," then there's 210.52(B)(2) Exception 2. Not sure if that's a reasonable argument or not. It's certainly not a good idea to run a gas range without a hood.

Cheers, Wayne

This is 2020 NEC

The length of the cord is not less than 450 mm (18 in.) and not over 1.2 m (4 ft).
  • (2)
Receptacles are located to protect against physical damage to the flexible cord.
  • (3)
The receptacle is supplied by an individual branch circuit.
  • (4)
    The receptacle shall be accessible.
  • (5)
The flexible cord shall have an equipment grounding conductor and be terminated with a grounding-type attachment plug.

I believe the individual circuit is not required if hardwired, but not allowed from a SABC.

Seems to be a poor practice and contrary to other code requirements like the fan box requirement. Many times the hood is changed out for a micro hood that now requires the individual circuit.
That's correct. I missed the hardwired part of the OP in my initial response regarding the IBC and was referring to a cord and plug connection as Dennis mentioned. As you've stated it cannot be on the SABC.
