Hi,

I don't do much residential new build wiring. I was wondering if it is required by NEC to install an outlet above ranges for hood vents?

I see 422.16(b) regarding flexible cord lengths and such but don't see there that there "shall" be an outlet installed above stoves for hood vents.

Is there another code section stating such?

We leave all wiring concealed for range hoods. So NO we don't use outlets. I know a lot of guys and perhaps the NEC use the "IF" rule. 'What if someone installs a microwave.
During the rough-in we leave a dedicated circuit for either zig zagged in the wall. If it's a microwave we pull it in the cabinet and cut in a box. If not, we pull it to the range hood than install a romex connector and terminate it.
Of course, we do some custom homes where the range hood requires a disconnect such as an outlet.

Thanks Buck.

So I understand your dedicated circuit and hard wiring. But is either that or an outlet required by code?

It seems like it's not but maybe I am missing the code section.

I don't think so. I was wondering if a circuit is required by NEC to be installed above a stove top for a range hood. Do you know the code section if it is required?

No code section requiring it. Now if you are putting in an over the range MW/Hood, you have to follow the mfg specs. If you're putting in just a range hood and it is cord & plug, then a dedicated circuit is required. But just a requirement for a circuit on a new construction for either is not required.

Yes, like Bill said I think it was in 05 the NEC worded it such that if you do install an outlet in the cabinet. That a dedicated 20 amp circuit is required. Otherwise pull the wire into the range hood and make it up. Then it was allowed on the SA or lighting circuit.

Electrical code doesn't mandate the equipment only says what must or maybe done if you install. Building code however may be mandating a particular peice of equipment and then the NEC would indicate proper or allowed wiring methods. I believe the requirement for a range/vent hood is building code. Now wireing possibilities are indicated by NEC as others have stated for allowable methods, done per mfg guidelines/specifications. (Plug/receptacle, or direct wire.)
