The kitchen remodel I’m working on has a Wolf brand hood with the fan motor being remotely located in the attic (above the kitchen).
I haven’t installed this type of setup before and the install instructions aren’t 100% clear.
It looks like the hood gets power (dedicated 15 amp circuit) and within the hood compartment has a receptacle that the motor plugs into?
If the motor unit is going to be remotely located in the attic I’m not sure how the motor is going to be able to plug into that outlet? Assuming an appliance cord isn’t allowed for a permanent install like this I’m not sure how to rough-in my romex for this install?

I’m looking for advice from anyone with experience in this type of fan hood?
Thanks

Do you have a model number? If there is no motor in the hood itself is there power required for a light and/or controls?

I don't believe you use the outlet in the hood. Run a wire from the receptacle to the in-line fan. I am guessing that the hood can be installed with a fan or with a remote fan.

Now that I’m looking over the specs (Wolf PL401912) I’m starting to put it together.
It looks like the Home Run goes to the hood liner and there’s an interconnect from the hood liner to the blower motor.
It’s a Wolf brand Pro Hood Liner. Options for the blower motor are to install it locally (in the hood itself), remotely in-line, or external (outside roof or wall).
They’re planning on the remote in-line blower motor install, so it will be in the attic above the kitchen.

14/2 HR to hood and 14/2 from hood to remote blower. I believe Wolf includes a short cord that runs from hood wiring compartment to the receptacle inside the hood used for the internal blower.

Some manufactures use the cord method and some have the blower connection inside the wiring compartment.

Yes, home run to hood, jump out from hood to remote blower.

How are they handling makeup air?

Many times it's done through the HVAC return air, but sometimes they don't want air pulling through the whole house.

Last year I did MUA with inline heater, and it was pretty involved

I would add that these "pro" type hoods almost always are of pretty high CFM and triggering building codes that require make up air. This can get complicated and not something you want to do after rough.

Anything over 400 CFM requires makeup air.

This reminds me of a high end house that I was doing control work in some years back. While it was not part of my scope I just happen to notice this giant custom hood over the kitchen island. I noticed It had no provisions for make air so I casually mentioned to the builder that this was going to be a problem. Of course he just blew me off. Not my problem so I just moved on. Turned out to be massive problem when the owner moved in and lit fire in the fire place for the first time.

That reminds me of the time. My ex father-in-law turned on the attic fan and forgot to close the damper in his fireplace. There wasn't a fire but there sure was a lot of soot all throughout that house 😅😅

I did one like that 5 years ago and it had a factory supplied cable with it to go from above range where power connected to the inline fan about 10 ft into the attic. Idk if it was a wolf I can't remember but I do remember installing that factory supplied wire and power coming in like a normal hood.

That’s a good question that I plan to ask Monday!

Mechanical code.

This is also a standard boilerplate on architectural drawings even if no building code is specified
