A Fire inspector has discovered many ranges with surface style range outlets on the floor behind electric ranges. The receptacles are not screwed to the floor or wall and are fed with romex wire. I haven't been able to locate a code reference that allows or disallows this. Any suggestions? Rodney

Try, 314.23(A). I would say that a surface mounted range receptacle would have to qualify as a box.

This has been standard residential practice in the areas I've worked in ( Florida, Texas, and Oklahoma ) for many years, and I have always wondered why no inspector has ever even mentioned it....
