Im in the process of developing a business plan would like to know if anyone has any references to contractor rates per area. also recomended estimating software. thanks

In my area the rates are from $50 to $160 an hour, i guess the guys on the lower end are part time or doing it for a hobby, the upper end is most of the service companies in the area, so i would guess somewhere in the middle would be average.

To establish a rate, you need to know all your overhead, and operating expenses, then add in a nice profit, if you look at what others charge, they may be loosing money, or making little, or no profit, not a good way to start off.

If you search this site, you will find many discussions on estimating software.

Also depends on what end of this industry your in.

New resi construction, Commercial services, industrial installations....ect.

We need more info from you.

As to software, I have heard some guys like the craftsman estimator when just getting started, and some still use it after being in business for 15 yrs.

mostly comm some res. 75 to 150 for t&m. on service calls sould truck charge be added to the bill seprate or should it be figured in the rate? The last company i worked for had me add the truck charge on the invoice I dont think many of the customers expected the additional charge.

75-150? that's a big swing.

Truck charges can be handled a bunch of different ways, the choice is yours.

You can charge out seperatley, and customers question, as you found out.
You can not itemize it, and adjust your hourly rate accordingly.
You can call it a different name other than service charge, or truck charge.
You can add it in on the price of the job, if your not itemizing.

Just make sure you cover its cost somehow.
