Can I use black tape on white #6 thhn cu to re-identify is as a hot. I think I remember this is limited to a certain size conductor? But I cannot remember the size. Thank you.
Individual conductors must be larger than # 6 to re-identify as you ask. If the white conductor is # 6 or smaller AND part of a cable assembly such as NM-B, then the white can be re-identified as a hot. See section 200.7 for all of the details.
White single conductors are never permitted to be re-identified for use as an ungrounded conductor, no matter what size they are, unless they are part of a cable assembly.
