Should I be concerned about running a reactive power capability test on a 50 year old generator? This involves major swings in the VARs. How does the change in vars affect the unit, high field currents? If you have high currents and any part of the machine is compromised...

Reactive power of any significance, could drive the controller bananas. Most generators have a Reactive Power Capability Curve.
