Does anyone know what the reading level of the NEC is?

I have not seen a published reading level index for the NEC, but you could take a pdf version of the NEC and run it through an application to calculate a measure pretty easily. Here is a simple description of one such measure (The Gunning Fog Index) and how to calculate it.
The presence of so many tables and cross references will complicate matters though. The simple Fog Index does not take that into consideration.

Interestingly, the Fog Index of the NEC Handbook (easier to read?) is 12.7, or somewhere around college freshman.

While the Audel Guide to the NEC is worse at 13.9 (more than a grade level higher!)
