trenching here in south georgia, you only have 1 reason to hate it.

georgia red clay

when digging postholes, you have to stop after each lift to chisel the clay off the posthole diggers. the quickest way is to have a guy standing next to you with a sledgehammer to hit it each time you pull up.

Don't you take a minute to walk the site or ask about someone's property ?

Honest, I'm just asking, wondering, pondering.

What your frost depth there, anywas ?

I hear the Anvil Chorus when I picture that.

"Da, clang!, da, clang!, da, clang!, da-da, clang!, da-da, clang!, da-da, clang!, da-da, clang!, da, clang!"

Yes, I take a hike, and ask the obvious, but some HOs just don't know what's in their yard. In this case, the HO had only lived there two years, and the house was built in '23. And some owners just don't understand why I'm asking. I recall one garage I trenched to and ended up tearing in to the irrigation system. "Oh, yeah, I forgot about that....."

Frost depth here in Iowa is 40", so footings go 48" minimum.

While working as and engineer for BellSouth I was called to a residence about a possible phone cable being in the way of a foundation. So since the records are never ever ever correct I put a call in for a bud locate. Well the BUD guy marked the cable and 2 feet on either side of the cable with bright orange paint. Needless to say the homeowner with a rented track hoe cut right threw this 100 pr cable and with a straight face claimed he didn't know it was there!!!

That's why I leave that type of work to others.

Most everyone who does that type of work on a subcontract basis states they're not responsible for damage to unmarked stuff. There's no tracer wire with this pipe, so it can't be located.

Cool, I just saw a new gas line Grey (i'll say PVC) going in and noted a yellow wire right besides it, now I know the rest of the story ....

It looks like I can see a saw cut. Is that coupling on all the way.

Plumbers have a plumbing version of the Erricson, a three piece fitting.

it doesn't seem undetectable.... looks like you detected it just fine...
by the way, who you calling a HO?

and a splendifirous job you've done of patching it..... it's even more fun
when it's electrical and you get to repull it as well....

I think what you're seeing is not a saw cut, but reference marks I make with a Sharpie so I know when the coupler is centered over the two ends.

Don't need a special 'Erricson' fitting, just a slip fitting (no internal stop).

Electrical I can locate..... even using passive 60hz detection.

I've found it better to hit pipe when trenching for electrical than to hit electrical whilst trenching for pipe... Repairs are always easier.

Most recently we had a hoe blackout of a 4C12 Teck for a pond filler level control. (I guess that would be jacketed MC for most of you guys) Luckily it's shut down for the winter... Waiting for the rain to stop before I get to work on it. Already picked up 3M cold-shrink, lest you guys have any better ideas.

I once cut a cesspool line with my Ditchwitch. The pipe was made out of a really cheap substance that looked like newspaper when cut. It was called "orangeberg." I found out I cut the pipe AFTER the HO flushed the toilet. It took me 4 hours to get the parts and fix the pipe. I don't like playing playing plumber for free and ever since I ask HO about septic system or cesspools.

Right here.
This little blurb might help some people:

"State law requires us to call an 800# whenever we excavate. This service only applies to major utility company main line equipment and will not locate many of the things that may be buried on your property. We are only able to make a surface visual check for things that are commonly found on a typical property without charging for the time and services to do so.
The owner assumes responsibility for informing the contractor of all underground pipes, conduits, cables, wires, tanks, drainage systems and structures, and agrees to hold the contractor harmless in event of loss or liability incurred as a result of incorrect or incomplete information provided to the contractor and agrees to indemnify contractor for loss or expense resulting from such incorrect or incomplete information.
