Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

Allen,
there are 2 large builders we deal with that spec SQ D.They already have these panels installed.
Then have these builders reimburse you for each replacement (this is not a workmanship waranty item or a substituion of a specified product) and have them take on SQ D.

I will say that SQ D will probably make things right to an extent.

Of course it serves SQ D right to have this problem seeing how they are moving all their manufacturing overseas.

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

Roger it is not that simple for Allen. They bidded to wire the house with SQ D being part of the specs. His company must stand behind this job for a year. They can't pass the charges to the builder. They could possibly refuse to start any more homes untill SQ D is back up running with breakers that work.I do not understand the builder wanting any more SQ D panels at this time not knowing if breakers will be available at trim.I somehow dought SQ D will pick up the full regular trip charges

Sorry Jim, but it is that simple.

If you do not substitute a specified item, you have a great leverage when support from the designers is needed when a problem is encountered.

Simple to use a different panel on new jobs but what about the 650 or so that are installed drywalled around textured around ? I can see my AHJ driving through a subdivision and see`s my guys tearing out all these panels without calling for additional inspections, they are 3 days out as it stands.Last week we trimmed a house on a saturday inspection was called friday inspected tuesday meter in on thurs closed and lived in on friday :D

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

I quit working at the Square D factory about 6 years ago, but here is a little of what I am hearing from friends that are still there.

AFCI production has moved south of the border. Testing was being done improperly - causing the defects to not be caught.

Repaires are being done here in Lincoln, Nebraska. The dock area is packed with recalled/returned breakers and they are working around the clock repairing them. At the same time another production line is being moved to the south, and layoffs are occurring. I know a lady with 27 years seniority that got bumped to second shift.

From my experience there, they are truly concerned about quality, and will be doing everything they can to make this right with everyone. Square D truly is conscerned about product quality and customer satisfaction.

I sold all my stock in SQ D. got good deal on federal pacific
CAnt help but think a house somewhere has burned by now because of defective AFCI

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

At least they finally accepted that there is a problem !!!imagine if they waites till there was a official recall.FPE`S and Zinsco panels were as Jim stated installed welding units :D Give us the replacment breakers and get the trip charges.Would hate to be a stockholder but oh well ;)

Re: Recall of Sqare D Arc-Fault Breakers

shocker I am curious why such a long time of production before bug was found. I would guess the cause of improper testing was from the facility move and a lack of documentation. Funny U.L. didn't find problem for they test annually for listing. With the housing market so strong, maunf. breakers like cookies just to keep up with demand seems like quality is declining plus unhappy workers losing their jobs.
